　　尼克·维尼泽洛斯是一个理发师，但却热衷于赌博。他有一个非常要好并且非常富有的朋友，给他筹集了一万块钱作为赌资，让他与赌博辛迪加进行赌博。他在一家旅馆出售香烟的柜台处碰到一位性感的金发美女，他没有禁受住诱惑，因此陷入了一场赌博的骗局之中，一口气输了个精光。于是，他虽然两手空空回到了原来的小镇，但学得更加精明了。他再次得到朋友的帮助，又来到城市重操旧业。这一次，他的运气足够好，识破了那些轨计，获得了巨大的成功，他侮辱了那个金发美女，并且用有了自己的赌场，成为了此地的赌博大亨。

　　这是一部非常有趣的电影，它讲述了一个理发师凭着运气和聪明才智从一地方小赌棍变成赌博大亨的故事，环环相扣的情节是获得了奥斯卡最佳编剧奖提名。虽然影片设计了赌博及其赌博背后的黑幕，但它并不是一部强盗电影。罗宾逊扮演的尼克并不是一个强盗似的人物，而是一个友善的、惹人喜爱并且诚实的“犯罪”老板，他是这之前的银幕上从未出现过的人物。他没有杀一个人，实际上，影片中没有任何一个被杀掉。从这部影片的状况也可以看出，赌博是不可能成为一种职业的。影片的核心是罗宾逊的精彩表演。他塑造的既老练又单纯的尼克是一个非常成功的银幕形象。
