简　　介
　　美国南北战争的时期，北卡罗来纳州的乡村，一位单身母亲莎拉伯斯·埃利斯（克里斯蒂娜·里奇Christina Ricci 饰），丈夫约翰（布伦·福斯特Bren Foster 饰）离开了她，她只能独自抚养照顾7岁的女儿梅乐蒂（加布里埃尔·波帕Gabrielle Popa 饰），并在战乱的废墟中打理着自家的农场。他们这里，是处于北方和南方之间的交战地带，战争和战争所导致的疫病横行，很多年轻的人死于战乱和传染病。
