　　杰妮是一位容貌出众的姑娘，在萨尔的帮助下，她离开了杂耍团，和萨尔结伴来到了纽约，想在百老汇寻求新的发展。在百老汇，杰妮以其出众的容貌和特别的说话方式，让著名的戏剧指导尼尔斯夫人破例收留了她，并在随后的演出中逐渐走红。成功后的杰妮在导演布鲁克斯的带领下，开始出入上流社会，由此也染上了酗酒的恶习。随着杰妮名气的不断增大，媒体中开始流传着一些关于杰妮不好的传闻。对此，面对萨尔的提醒和告诫，杰妮不但置若罔闻，而且还离开了萨尔与乔那结了婚。
　　一个偶然的机会，杰妮认识了演员迪斯蒙，并答应为她帮忙。不想杰妮拿过迪斯蒙的剧本后，自己出演了其中的主角，并又一次获得巨大的成功。迪斯蒙因此失去机会而跳楼自杀，这让杰妮从此处于惊恐与不安之中，以至于在另一部新剧的首演上因恐惧而晕倒。从此，杰妮被演员协会勒令不得出演于正规的舞台。不久，杰妮因意志消沉而服毒自杀，给观众留下的是由她主演、且风靡全美的一部话剧《雨》。
