　　一个有着忧郁眼神的中年男子正在对他的心理医生乔什（约翰·瑞特尔）冷静地讲述着他遇到的困扰，却把医生吓得大惊失色：“你是在和我开玩笑吧？”
　　不不，他可没有开玩笑，这个满腹心事的男人叫亚历克斯（威廉·梅西），从很小的时候起，他当杀手的父亲迈克尔（唐纳德·萨瑟兰）就开始训练他继承自己的事业，他让小亚历克斯去杀松鼠，尽管亚历克斯非常不情愿，但是在父亲严厉的苛责下，他还是一百二十个不乐意地执行了，而从这一刻起，亚历克斯也就算是跟着父亲走上了当杀手这条道路。
　　但是杀手也要有个正经身份做幌子，总不能见人就自我介绍“本人是杀手，价钱公道，童叟无欺，保证万无一失”吧？于是，亚历克斯也就经营起一家邮购公司，在这个身份的掩护下，居然还给他娶到了一个叫漂亮的妻子玛莎（特蕾茜·乌尔曼），如今，他们已经有了个六岁的儿子萨米，除了亚历克斯不为人知的秘密工作外，这个家庭的一切都看来和别人没什么区别。
　　可是杀手也是人啊，和大多数这个年纪的人一样，亚历克斯也必须要面对着中年危机的困扰，他早已经厌倦了杀人的勾当，也厌倦了开始变的喋喋不休的妻子，但是他却深深爱着自己可爱的儿子，迫不得已，他只好去寻求心理医生的帮助，医生还没见到，亚历克斯却先在候诊室里认识了一个患有狂躁症的叛逆女孩莎拉（妮芙·坎贝尔），莎拉漂亮、敏感、具有天生的洞察力，于是，两人之间发生了奇妙的化学反应……
　　于是局面变得越发不可收拾，他长期处在父亲的阴影之下，他无法摆脱苦闷童年的阴影，他对生活感到麻木无力，他厌倦了他的婚姻，却舍不得他年幼的儿子，他还爱上了一个比他小20岁的性感女孩，最要命的是，他还是个杀手！
　　这下，亚历克斯那个可怜的心理医生顿时觉得一个头两个大……
　　本片的导演兼编剧亨利·布拉默尔以撰写电视剧集的剧本出道，曾担任《白衣群英》等几部热门连续剧的编剧工作，这次他首次担纲导演，终于可以尽情发挥他的幽默天赋了，他赋予整部影片一种融合了诙谐与嘲讽的基调，其中也夹杂了不少一针见血的犀利讽刺，表达出一个小人物面对生活时的困扰、悲哀和无奈。
　　影片演员阵容整齐，因《惊声尖叫》系列而窜红的妮芙·坎贝尔看来并不满意将自己局限在校园恐怖片中，在影片《野东西》（又译《玩尽杀绝》）中，她饰演了一个看似冷漠粗俗实则城府极深的厉害女人，赢得了不少影评人的赞赏，这次，她再次尝试在这部描写中年人心理的影片中担任一个“第三者”的角色，又会有何突破性的表现呢？
　　饰演亚历克斯父亲迈克尔的是好莱坞的资深演员唐纳德·萨瑟兰，这位1934年出生于加拿大的老演员迄今已在超过110部影片中担任过角色，为我们所熟知的有《刺杀肯尼迪》、《恐怖地带》、《杀戮时刻》、《太空牛仔》等等。
　　当然，最劳苦功高的要算是男主角的扮演者、曾在《冰雪暴》和《木兰》中有出色表现的威廉·梅西，美国的影评家们向来不吝于将各种赞美之辞加在他的名字前面，这个矮小瘦弱貌不惊人的演员能取得今天的成就全靠他出类拔萃的演技，他能让人信服的扮演任何类型任何心态的角色，只要他出现在影片中，不出1分钟，观众就会深信他本人就是片中的那个角色，即使是在《急诊室故事》这样明星云集的剧集中客串出演一个戏份不多的小角色，也足以让人念念不忘。当然他最擅长的，还是演绎处于特殊情况下的平凡小人物，所以在这部《杀手无罪》中，相信他有足够的空间将角色的软弱、无奈和以及在麻木中寻找感情宣泄的茫然诠释得淋漓尽致。
　　这部黑色幽默电影早在2000年的圣丹斯电影节中就收到广泛好评，预料这部电影，将是继《美国美人》之后，再次在美国掀起一阵中年危机话题的好莱坞佳作。
