　　音乐学家霍华德同未婚妻尤尼丝到了旧金山，此行的目的是为了得到拉雷比基金会颁发的2万美元的奖学金。霍华德随身携带的花格皮箱中装着收集来的火城岩石标本，那是用来证明音乐起源的重要证据。他们下榻在布里斯托尔旅馆。同时下榻在这家旅馆的三位客人恰巧也带着同霍华德一模一样的皮箱，更巧的是，他们同霍华德住在同一层。接待员弗里兹对霍斯金斯太太皮箱中的贵重珠宝起了不良居心，他同私家侦探哈里勾结在一起，准备侍机下手。史密斯先生的皮箱中装着政府的秘密文件，间谍琼斯费尽心机得要把这些文件搞到手。第三个是霍华德的追求者米迪，她追踪心爱的人来到此地，她的皮箱里装满了各种内衣。故事就围绕着这4个皮箱展开，怀着各种目的来到此地的各路人马为达到目的，各展其才，在旅馆里不断掀起风波，上演了一出出闹剧。
