　　电影选取的美国南北战争中的一段真实历史。1864年5月1日，北方联邦(Union)和南方联盟(Confederate )军队在弗吉尼亚州的谢南多厄河谷(Shenandoah Valley)展开激战，亦称为Battle of New Market，南方联盟在紧急迎战北方联邦的情况下以少胜多的一场战役。南方联盟的军队里有一支由247名弗吉尼亚军事学院(Virginia Military Institute, VMI)陆军学员组成的小队。这部电影主要是讲述VMI的陆军学员怎样穿越枪林弹雨参与到这场战役中。在抢夺一处平地的战斗中，几位VMI学员的鞋子遗漏 在泥地里，因此这片地方被称为Field of Lost Shoes。这场战役里共有10名VMI学员牺牲，其中6名葬在如今的VMI校园里。
