　　1976年，美国弗吉尼亚州。担当中学教员的诺玛（卡梅隆·迪亚茨 Cameron Diaz 饰）和在NASA供职的丈夫亚瑟（詹姆斯·麦斯登 James Marsden 饰）过着幸福的生活，他们的事业小有成就，衣食无忧，唯一的不足则是儿子沃尔特（Sam Oz Stone 饰）身染重病，健康每况愈下。随着岁月的流逝，儿子的病情不断加重，夫妇俩渐渐无法负担这巨额的医疗费用。
