　　故事发生在17世纪末期美国西部，臭名远扬、作恶多端的大盗本?韦德（卢塞尔?克劳 饰）在又干了一票抢劫火车的大买卖之后得意忘形，结果在亚利桑那一个边远的荒漠小镇阴沟里翻船，被警察逮捕。小镇警察在欣喜若狂之余，开始发愁怎样把这位煞星转送到尤马镇去受审。农场主丹?埃文斯（克里斯蒂安?贝尔 饰）挺身而出接受了这个几乎不可能完成的任务，因为他的农场陷入经济危机，急需资金拯救，而政府会提供愿意押送本?韦德的人一笔可观的佣金，为了妻儿的安定生活，他不得不铤而走险。
