　　《塞尔玛》的故事发生在上世纪60年代，曾组织过著名的蒙哥马利罢车运动的马丁·路德·金，号召全市黑人对公共法进行抵制，迫使法院取消地方公共运输工具上的座位隔离。1963年他在首都华盛顿组织了一场争取黑人权益的游行，还在塞尔玛、蒙哥马利和阿拉巴马举行了三次声势浩大的抗议声讨。汤姆·威尔金森在片中饰演美国总统林顿·B·约翰逊总统，约翰逊开始是一个种族主义者，后来看到了自己的内心，最终与马丁·路德·金站在一起，反对种族隔离。蒂姆·罗斯在片中扮演阿拉巴马州长乔治·华莱士。这个极具争议的美国地方领导人，曾发出过“现在隔离！明天隔离！永远隔离！”的著名口号，在《塞尔玛》这部电影中，这个角色显然是站到了马丁的对立面。
