　　　　2004年，正值美国总统大选期间，乔治·沃克·布什和约翰·福布斯·克里的角逐如火如荼。各家新闻媒体争相报道关于两位候选人的新闻。哥伦比亚广播公司《60分钟》节目的制作人玛丽·梅普斯也希望可以报道关于大选的相关新闻。她组建了一支精英团队，其中包括著名主持人丹·拉瑟。他们在追查布什在德克萨斯州空军国民警卫队的档案时发现疑点重重，档案的部分缺失使他们怀疑布什在服役期间得到优待。为了查明真相，他们试图联系当时的军官，但毫无结果。这时，一位名为比尔的上校自称拥有布什停止飞行记录的复印件。玛丽等人围绕这份记录展开详细调查，并将此新闻公之于众。但随后，公示的证据被认为漏洞百出，比尔也反口否定记录的真实性。一时间，玛丽·梅普斯声名狼藉，整个团队不得不接受审查小组的询问。最终查明，玛丽得到的文件在真实性存在严重问题，玛丽·梅普斯被解雇，丹·拉瑟辞职，整个新闻团队被要求解散。 影片改编自《真相与责任：媒体、总统和特权》。
