　　　　下総羽生村の按摩の宗悦は、旗本の深見新左衛門に貸した金を受け取りに行き殺され、累が渕に沈められる。その夜、宗悦の怨霊が現れ、発狂した新左衛門は妻を斬殺。怨霊に導かれて累が淵で溺死する。それから二十年後、新左衛門の息子・新吉は、江戸の商家で番頭として働き、一人娘お久と恋仲になる。しかし新吉はお久が通う三味線の師匠の豊志賀に口説かれ情を交わしてしまい、それが知れるところとなり、店を追い出されて豊志賀と暮らし始める。ある日、自らの顔を誤って三味線のバチで傷つけてしまう豊志賀。ところが、それをきっかけに彼女の顔は異様な形相に変わり果て、ついに狂死してしまう。豊志賀の亡霊に悩まされる新吉とお久は駆け落ちをし、新吉の故郷の累が淵へ辿り着くが、豊志賀の亡霊が2人を追い、死へと追い込んでいく…。 中川信夫監督による本格的怪談映画の第一作目。人間の業の深さの描き方や、顔の崩れ方などは「東海道四谷怪談」の原点とも言うべき作品。親の因果が子に報い、事件に関わる人々が累が渕に吸い寄せられて次々に壮絶な死を遂げるラストシーンは凄惨極まりない。 ニューテレシネ＆デジタル・リマスター・バージョンでのDVD化です。
