　　　　信州水無月藩井坂道場の師範代を務める小布施拓馬は、岩代藩士樫山伝七郎殺害事件の下手人水無月藩家老の息子片桐万之助の身替りとして、姿をかくすことになった。藩の用人真壁半太夫の説得によるもので、彼の娘波江は拓馬の婚約者であった。約束の一年後、高崎の本陣を訪れた拓馬はそこで半太夫の急死と例の事件の証人真壁十郎太の裏切りを知って愕然とした。しかも下手人として捕えられようとした。数人を斬って逃れたものの武士の約束を破られた拓馬は失望し、人がかわったように見えた。そして無実の囚人に味方して非情の代官を斬った。かくて彼は水無月、岩代両藩から追われる身となった。ある時彼は駈落して心中を企てた奈美江と平吉を助け、道連れの小悪党舟次郎の金まで与えたが、彼等は死を選んだ。拓馬はまた失望した。一方波江は従兄十郎太に結婚を迫られ、拓馬のあとを追った。しかし病気で悩み、道中再び十郎太の監視下におかれた。何とか脱出したもののならず者に誘拐されてしまった。さて拓馬はある峠道で、十郎太や剣の師匠井坂ら水無月藩討手と対決した。拓馬は井坂と死闘を演じ、これを倒し自らも深傷を負って谷間へ転落した。その彼を救ったのは旅篭の娘志乃であった。だが志乃は岩代藩討手たちの暴行にあい、自殺した。拓馬の胸中は怒りと悲しみでふるえた。流れ歩くうち彼は木曽谷の五郎蔵一家の用心棒に雇われた。五郎蔵は拓馬の消息を探り当てた舟次郎の入智恵で拓馬を水無月、岩代両藩へ密告した。祭りで賑わう木曽谷のある女郎屋で拓馬は変り果てた波江と出会った。彼の懇願で波江の自由が許されたが、時すでに遅く女郎屋は討手に囲まれていた。波江は父の許しを乞うたが、拓馬はやり場のない怒りをついに爆発させて、討手の群に斬り進んでいつた。
