莫塞斯（瑞安·奥尼尔 Ryan O'Neal 饰）并不是一个本分的商人，即使干的是推销圣经的行当，也并不能阻止他使用一些上不了台面的手段。一场车祸夺取了莫塞斯的情人的性命，情人留下的一个小女儿埃迪（塔图姆·奥尼尔 Tatum O'Neal 饰）成了莫塞斯的负担。在向肇事者要得200美元后，莫塞斯决定将埃迪送往她的姨妈家去。
