　　1987年，惊悚小说家可利夫·巴克将他的第一部小说《猛鬼追魂》搬上了银幕，从此奠定了他在惊悚世界的地位。故事以一个能打开地狱之门的魔方盒子为核心，其卖座程度带动了其后四部续集的问世，在由小说家转型到导演的同类之中，他是寥寥无几的成功者之一。巴克的电影风格属于传统的恐怖派，以赤裸裸的血腥和暴力见长，直接诉诸观众的感官刺激，营造最接近西方人心目中标准的地狱景象。
