　　为了向爱尔兰和詹姆斯·乔伊斯致敬，好莱坞的电影大师约翰·休斯顿以乔伊斯的短篇小说集《都柏林人》中的《死者》作为他的第41部影片的题材，同时这也是他的最后一部作品，威尼斯电影节在他去世后的几天举行了该片的首映式。约翰·休斯顿在《死者》中实现他同其儿子和女儿合作的心愿：约翰·休斯顿的儿子负责改编了剧本，他的女儿则扮演了女主角格丽塔。此片在欧美大受欢迎，正如休斯顿本人所说：“《死者》中反映了许多现实问题——爱情、婚姻、迷恋和死亡。《死者》不愧为英语小说中最伟大的作品之一，很少有故事能具有这样的魅力。”
