　　根据美国作家亨利·詹姆斯的小说改编，以百年前的波士顿为故事背景，描写克里斯多夫·李维与梅特琳·波特之间一段波折重重的爱情。因导演詹姆斯·伊沃里在此片的手法还不够圆熟（他是在两年后执导《窗外有蓝天》才建立起名牌声誉的），故男女主角的爱情显得有点干涩，倒是一群演技派的女角丰富了本片的时代风貌，包括范尼莎·雷德格雷夫、洁西卡·坦迪、琳达·亨特等都演出精彩，在摄影、美术、服装等技术层面也制作严谨，令观众在视觉上颇有收获。
