　　十几岁的青年曼纽尔在抢劫一家便利店时，用枪杀死了一名店员，那个人甚至还没有他那么大。他因此被关进了监狱的单人房间，被判23年监禁。在监狱里，他目不转睛地看着报纸上已经发黄的受害人的相片，怎么也不能接受自己犯下了如此大的罪行，从此葬送了两个年轻人的一生。
　　在内疚和悔恨中度过了他的牢狱生活，曼纽尔出乎意料地被释放了，虽然回到了社会，获得了自由，但他赎罪的心理还在痛苦地折磨着自己，并希望能够有机会让自己为少年时犯下的过错赎罪。
　　在他漫无目的地在城市里游荡的时候，一次偶然的机会，认识了一个女人，名叫阿黛尔·伊斯莉（荷莉·亨特 饰），她带着一个十几岁的孩子过着艰难的生活。曼纽尔看到那个孩子，就想起了当年的自己，处在躁动期也处在犯罪的边缘——他决定帮助这对母子，从而也为自己赎罪。
　　无处栖居的曼纽尔也遇到了一位牧师（摩根·弗里曼 饰），牧师为他在社区中心找到了一个落脚的地方，他只需要在夜总会里当停车场的保安。在社区里，他也受到了一位有过创伤记忆的女人——莎弗·玛琳（克尔斯滕·邓斯特 饰）的鼓励，使曼纽尔能更积极地投入到社区中。在工作之余，他也常常帮助阿黛尔母子，愿意为他们做任何事，因为，他知道，阿黛尔就是他少年时杀死的那个年青人的姐姐。
