　　主人公史蒂芬（艾德里安·布洛迪 Adrien Brody 饰）是个失意的人，年近30还和父母姐姐住在一起。他的梦想是成为腹语表演者，辞职后他买回了一个木偶，把它当作一个知心朋友，每天跟木偶对话。家人都觉得他的举动很可笑，只有他的好友范妮（米拉·乔沃维奇 Milla J ovovich 饰）支持他，她也有一个被别人视作不切实际的音乐梦。
　　史蒂芬在职业介绍所认识了罗蕾娜（维拉·法米加 Vera Farmiga 饰），并对她一见钟情。在范妮的怂恿下，史蒂芬鼓起勇气向她示好，却产生了误会，遭到她的报警举报。化解误会后，两人的交往越发亲密，史蒂芬得知她是个单亲妈妈，和年幼的女儿生活在一起。当史蒂芬想和罗蕾娜进一步发展时，她却踌躇不前。与此同时，史蒂芬的家庭也出现了矛盾。一天，史蒂芬把形影不离的木偶退了回去……
