简　　介　
　　故事发生在十九世纪的英国，贝姬（瑞茜·威瑟斯彭 Reese Witherspoon 饰）出生于贫寒家庭，但是，野心勃勃的她做梦都想要能够跻身上流社会，为此，贝姬来到了爵士彼得考利（鲍勃·霍斯金斯 Bob Hoskins 饰）家中，担任起了家庭教师的职务。聪明伶俐的贝姬很快就获得了姑妈玛蒂尔达（艾琳·阿特金斯 Eileen Atkins 饰）的认可和信任，之后，贝姬跟随玛蒂尔达来到了梦寐以求的伦敦。
　　在伦敦，贝姬同曾经的好友艾米利亚（萝玛拉·嘉瑞 Romola Garai 饰）重逢了。艾米利亚深爱着军官乔治（乔纳森·莱斯·梅耶斯 Jonathan Rhys Meyers 饰），为了同他结婚不惜背弃了家庭，与此同时，贝姬亦同考利家的继承人罗顿（杰姆斯·鲍弗 James Purefoy 饰）秘密踏入了婚姻的殿堂。然而，等待着他们的并非光明的前程，而是残酷的战争。
