　　电脑科学家海蒙福勒（亚敏穆勒）以及道格拉斯霍尔（克雷格毕尔歌）将电脑科学里的虚拟实境发展到最高的境界。他们在小小的电脑晶片上虚拟出一个活生生、实景实物1937年的洛杉矶。他们时常进出虚虚实实的两个世界。海蒙因为在1937年的世界里发现了惊人的秘密急需告诉他的工作伙伴─道格拉斯，于是他将写有秘密的信函留在三~年代的世界里。
　　当海蒙回到现在的世界的当晚，他就遇害了！而隔天道格拉斯起床后先是发现家中多了一件血衣，接着在听见海蒙被杀的消息。道格拉斯理所当然被认为是杀害海蒙的头号凶手。道格拉斯居然完全不记得前一晚的任何事情，他会是凶手吗？这时，突然出现一位声称是海蒙女儿的神秘女子，这名女子与命案有何关联？道格拉斯要如何找出事情的真相？是谁杀了海蒙？难道是1937年来的杀手吗？
　　2000年前，柏拉图曾主张「真实的世界」只存在人们的想像之中。如今现代社会中先进的科技似乎开始在证明柏拉图的说法。所有的事情如飞弹及核子试爆皆能在一个小小的晶片中模拟出来。这个虚拟出来的事界不仅可以提供人类有价值的资讯，同时对「真实的世界」丝毫不会做任何实际摧毁的动作。但如果这个虚拟的世界进化了呢？万一这个伪造出来的世界发展到超出了应有的范围而模糊了虚实的界线呢？万一这已经发生了呢？依据Simulacron-3这本小说改编而成的即是探讨这个寓言式的话题发生的可能性。本片导演约瑟夫骆斯纳在一段访问中谈到：「这部电影可说是Simulacron-3这本小说的浓缩版。这个故事的理论、背景、究竟谁才是造物者、究竟什么才是真实的，这一切都非常的吸引我。这使得我去思考究竟谁以及什么才是上帝与真相。」
