　　活泼开朗的雪儿·詹姆森是桑那斯图书馆的儿童区图书管理员。桑那斯图书馆对她有着特别的意义，小的时候雪儿常被父亲带去图书馆，他们每天一起穿过那些门洞，走进那个囊括世间万物的神奇地方。在那里，她爱上了书籍，并立志成为一名图书管理员，桑那斯图书馆就是她的全部。
祖父去世后，托尼·桑那斯接管了桑那斯集团。年轻有为，相貌英俊，完全是成功人士的典范。然而，他和桑那斯家族却也有着不为人知的烦恼。从小被祖父严厉管束没有自由，母亲去世后父亲又不满祖父的独断专行离开。因此，托尼渴望着向别人证明自己可以做得像祖父一样优秀。他身体里流淌着桑那斯家族的血液，为了成功不惜一切，拆除桑那斯图书馆改为住宅大赚一笔就成了他的必然选择。
一面是把图书馆视为生命的文艺姑娘，一面是踌躇满志的理智青年，矛盾的双方相遇了。
为了挽救图书馆，雪儿举办了一场平安夜的圣诞树装饰比赛，试图打动桑那斯夫人——即托尼的祖母。许许多多对图书馆有着特殊感情的人加入了比赛，而托尼为了保住自己的工程也报名参加了。
