　　在英格丽·褒曼毕生的演艺生涯中，她演得最多的一个角色，就是法兰西圣女贞德，先是舞台剧，最后拍成电影。这部耗资巨大的影片在后来的电影史上评价很高，当时却受到人们的冷遇。在奥斯卡奖的评选中，它甚至没有能够得到最佳影片的提名。但褒曼在影片中的表演依然得到很高评价。大文学家肖伯纳曾经写过一个相同杜的剧本，他在邀请褒曼作客时，问为什么没有用他写的剧本。褒曼回答说：你的剧本虽然很精彩，但那些对话是肖伯纳的而不是贞德的。”这种对人物的准确理解，是褒曼演出成功的重要原因。后来这部影片被评为世界十大不朽名片之一。
